Celebrating 30 Years of Priesthood: Fr Martin Micallef

Today, we celebrate a very special milestone as Fr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, marks 30 years since his ordination to the priesthood.

For the past three decades, Fr Martin has devoted his life to serving others with compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication. Whether in parish communities or through his leadership at Id-Dar tal-Providenza, his ministry has been defined by a commitment to helping those most in need.

Born in Luqa on 10th November 1967 to John and Jane Micallef, Fr Martin’s journey towards the priesthood began at an early age. After attending Luqa Primary School, the Minor Seminary, New Lyceum, and the University of Malta, where he studied Philosophy, Theology, and Pastoral Theology, he entered the Archbishop’s Major Seminary in 1987 to prepare for his vocation.

He was ordained a deacon in November 1994 before being ordained a priest on 5th July 1996.

During the early years of his ministry, Fr Martin served in several Maltese parishes, first as Vice Parish Priest in Tal-Ibraġ and later as Parish Priest in Ħal Għaxaq and Marsascala. In each community, he became known for his approachable nature, pastoral care, and dedication to the people he served.

A new chapter began in 2008, when he was appointed Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza. Since then, he has continued the home’s mission of providing people with disabilities a place where they can live with dignity, independence, and a true sense of belonging.

Beyond his work at Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Fr Martin has continued to serve the wider community. In 2024, Archbishop Charles Scicluna appointed him Episcopal Vicar for Diaconia, entrusting him with supporting the Church’s mission to care for those most in need. He also serves on the Council of the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD), representing the residential services sector for persons with disabilities.

Today, as Fr Martin celebrates 30 years of priesthood, we thank him not only for his ministry but also for the compassion, leadership, and hope he has shared with so many people throughout the years.

Congratulations, Fr Martin, on this wonderful milestone. We wish you continued health, happiness, and many more years of faithful service.
