First Phase of Player Training Concludes with 24 Hour Trial

The journey to this year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon reached another important milestone as the 60 athletes hoping to secure a place in the fundraising event completed a demanding 24-hour trial.

Held at the grounds of Id-Dar tal-Providenza between Saturday and Sunday, the endurance challenge marked the final assessment before the selection of the 40 players who will take part in this year’s volleyball marathon.

Throughout the trial, players were divided into teams and rotated on and off the court while the coaching staff closely monitored their performances. Athletes were assessed on a range of criteria, including technical ability, physical endurance, teamwork, and how they responded to fatigue and pressure during the 24-hour challenge.

This trial is one of the crucial stages of the selection process, giving every player one final opportunity to impress the coaching staff and earn a place among the Top 40 athletes.

The Next Phase Begins

The final squad of forty players will be announced over the coming days, with those selected moving on to the next phase of preparations for the BOV Volleyball Marathon.

From this point onwards, the players will be divided into five teams and will continue training together over the next three weeks. The focus will shift towards team chemistry, strategy, and endurance as they prepare for the ultimate challenge, playing continuously throughout the 53-hour volleyball marathon.

Every training session brings the players one step closer to one of Malta’s most inspiring sporting fundraising events, where determination, teamwork, and community spirit come together in support of Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

The BOV Volleyball Marathon will take place between Thursday 16th and Saturday 18th July at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali, which will host the event for the very first time.

BOV Volleyball Marathon Official Press Launch

We have just officially launched this year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon. The Official Press Launch took place at the St. Clare’s College training grounds in Pembroke where the players have their training sessions!

Addressing those present at the training grounds, Mgr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, highlighted the need for funds to enable the Home to continue providing residential services to its 115 residents. He described the move to the MFCC as a significant undertaking that offers tremendous potential for growth and visibility. Mgr Micallef encouraged the public to attend the event, support the players taking on this challenge and, above all, contribute to the cause.

Speaking to the media, Mr Ernest Agius, Chief Operations Officer of Bank of Valletta, said that BOV is proud to once again support an event that promotes dignity, inclusion and opportunity for persons with disabilities. He noted that the Bank has been a longstanding supporter of the Volleyball Marathon and looks forward to continuing its commitment in the years ahead. Also present were Charles Azzopardi, Head of CSR, Events & Business Alliances at Bank of Valletta, and CSR Manager Samantha Abela Caruana.

The marathon will be inaugurated by H.E. Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, on Thursday 16 July at 6.30pm and will conclude at 11.00pm on Saturday 18 July 2026. Forty players, selected after six weeks of training, will form five teams and play continuous volleyball for over 53 hours, not for personal gain but to support a worthy cause. The BOV Volleyball Marathon is not only a sporting event but also a powerful expression of solidarity through sport.

Visitors attending the event at the MFCC can expect a family-friendly atmosphere, with the new venue providing an excellent opportunity for the BOV Volleyball Marathon to reach new heights. Arts Council Malta is also supporting the event and is working with the organisers to ensure a high-quality entertainment programme featuring established headline acts on all three nights. Lara & The Jukeboys will perform on Thursday evening, Versatile Brass & Ensemble on Friday, while the Spiteri Lucas Band will headline a Classic Rock Night on Saturday.

Players conduct 12 hour trial at St. Dorothy’s School Grounds in Żebbuġ

With training now officially underway, athletes hoping to secure a place in this year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon headed to St. Dorothy’s School in Żebbuġ and faced their first major test over the weekend.

The players were divided into six teams and took part in a challenging 12-hour trial, marking the first real endurance test on the road to the volleyball marathon. The trial provided coaches and organisers with an opportunity to assess participants in a competitive environment while also giving players a taste of the physical and mental demands that lie ahead.

Throughout the 12-hour challenge, players were evaluated across several key areas, including physical fitness, technical volleyball skills, teamwork, attitude, and overall readiness for the marathon. These assessments contribute towards the final selection process, which will ultimately determine the 40 athletes chosen to participate in this year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon.

The trial also highlighted the importance of teamwork and resilience, two qualities that are essential for successfully completing a 53-hour volleyball marathon. Big thanks to the administration of St. Dorothy’s for giving us access to their school grounds and making the 12 hour trial possible!

Next Stop: The 24-Hour Trial

While the players successfully completed their first endurance challenge, the journey is only just beginning.

Over the coming weeks, these athletes will be put through a series of training sessions and trials as they compete for a place among the final 40 players who will take on the incredible challenge of participating in the 53-hour volleyball marathon.

Training is designed to prepare players both physically and technically for the demands of the event. Sessions include a combination of volleyball drills, fitness exercises, endurance work, and team-building activities, all aimed at ensuring participants are ready for one of Malta’s most unique sporting fundraisers.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this year’s volleyball marathon preparations is the mix of talent involved. The training squad includes both newcomers eager to experience the event for the first time and seasoned participants who have already taken part in multiple editions of the BOV Volleyball Marathon.

This endurance challenge will give organisers the opportunity to evaluate players under conditions that more closely reflect the demands of the volleyball marathon itself. It will also allow athletes to test their physical and mental resilience while gaining valuable experience ahead of the final selection process.

With the countdown well underway, excitement continues to build as players work towards securing their place in this year’s event.

The BOV Volleyball Marathon in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza will take place between 16th and 18th July. For the first time ever, the volleyball marathon will be hosted at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the biggest and most memorable editions yet.

The Road to the BOV Volleyball Marathon 2026 Officially Begins

The journey towards this year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon officially got underway last night as players and volunteers gathered for their first introduction to the event and its important mission.

Those who applied to be part of the 2026 volleyball marathon visited Id-Dar tal-Providenza in Siġġiewi, where they were given a deeper understanding of the organisation’s work and the impact that the annual fundraiser has on the lives of its residents.

The session was led by Nadine Camilleri Cassano, Administrator of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, who provided an overview of the home’s mission and its ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest possible quality of life for all residents. Participants also learned why fundraising initiatives such as the BOV Volleyball Marathon are essential in helping the organisation continue its valuable work.

Following the presentation, Kris Croker, Technical Director of the BOV Volleyball Marathon, outlined what lies ahead for the aspiring players. Over the coming weeks, all applicants will take part in training sessions and player trials, with one goal firmly in mind — earning a place among the 40 athletes selected to participate in this year’s volleyball marathon.

The chosen players will take on the incredible challenge of playing continuously during the BOV Volleyball Marathon, which will take place between 16th and 18th July.

The evening also gave participants the opportunity to experience the work of Id-Dar tal-Providenza first-hand. Players and volunteers were taken on a guided tour of the facilities and visited one of the residences currently undergoing refurbishment.

The visit offered a powerful reminder of how funds raised through the volleyball marathon are put to meaningful use. Seeing the improvements being made to the residence highlighted the direct impact that donations have on enhancing the lives of those who call Id-Dar tal-Providenza home.
