The Stories Behind the BOV Volleyball Marathon: Meet Charlene

When Charlene’s family are asked what Id-Dar tal-Providenza means to them, their answer comes without hesitation.

“Peace of mind.”

Those three words capture years of love, dedication, and the comfort of knowing that someone you care about is surrounded by people who treat her with kindness, dignity, and respect.

A Journey of Patience and Love

Charlene lives with epilepsy and has autistic traits.

When she was growing up, support services and specialised care were far more limited than they are today. Like many families at the time, her parents had to find their own way, adapting every aspect of life to meet Charlene’s needs.

One memory remains especially close to her mother’s heart.

She waited ten years to hear Charlene say one simple word.

“Ma.”

It was a moment she will never forget.

A single word that carried a lifetime of love.

Living, Not Just Existing

Today, Charlene lives at Dar Pirotta, one of the residences operated by Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

Her mother believes that one of the greatest strengths of the residence is that it allows residents to remain active members of the community rather than becoming isolated from it.

Charlene enjoys a full and varied lifestyle.

Her days include time at the day centre, outings with other residents, swimming sessions, music therapy, and a wide range of activities that keep her engaged, active, and connected with the world around her.

It’s not simply about receiving care. It’s about living life.

A Difficult Goodbye That Became the Right Decision

When Charlene moved into Id-Dar tal-Providenza, both of her parents found the transition emotional.

For so many years, their daily lives had revolved around caring for their daughter.

Suddenly, the family home felt very different.

Yet, as time passed, those feelings gave way to reassurance.

Charlene quickly settled into her new surroundings, built friendships, and embraced life at the residence.

Today, her mother smiles as she describes how happy Charlene is.

In her own words, she says Charlene is “treated like a queen.”

For any parent, there could be no greater comfort.

The Gift of Peace of Mind

Charlene’s story reminds us that support is about much more than providing accommodation.

It’s about creating opportunities, encouraging independence, and helping every resident live with dignity, purpose, and joy.

For her family, Id-Dar tal-Providenza has done exactly that.

It has given Charlene a place where she is loved, respected, and encouraged to enjoy every day to the fullest.

And it has given her parents something they value above all else:

Peace of mind.

This year’s BOV Volleyball Marathon takes place between Thursday 16th and Saturday 18th July at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali.

Every donation helps ensure that residents like Charlene continue to enjoy full, active lives while giving families the reassurance that their loved ones are receiving the very best care.

Because peace of mind is one of the greatest gifts a family can receive.
